Monthly Program Themes

Our varied programs help in developing the whole child by meeting their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs.
Since children develop differently at different ages, we offer child care programs themes designed for certain age groups.
Program Themes for November 2011

Infants
For infants, the theme is “All Around Me.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Language: Playing with farm animal puppets; Singing “Ten Little Fingers”
- Motor: Coloring with chunky crayons; Filling and dumping out soft blocks from a plastic container
- Cognitive: Exploring textures of fabric pieces; Shaking rattles of different sizes and sounds
- Sensory: Exploring pumpkins and leaves
Toddlers
For Toddlers, the theme is “The Farm.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Language: Exploring books, photographs, and magnets about the farm and farm animals
- Creative Arts: Making collages using tape; Playing music instruments as a band
- Sensory: Washing pumpkins
- Dramatic Play: Pretending to be farmers tending to animals and crops with farm-related props and accessories
Discovery Preschool
For Discovery Preschool, the theme is “The Farm.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Language Arts: Exploring farm-related books, photo cards, and photos; Using farm-related finger puppets and flannel pieces to tell farm stories; Featured books: Let’s Go Visiting by Sue Williams and The Cow That Went Oink by Bernard Most
- Creative Arts: Creating black and white art; Painting with corncobs
- Science & Sensory: Exploring tactile cards; Removing kernels from corn cobs
- Dramatic Play: Pretending to be farmers and customers in a farmer’s market
- Math & Manipulatives: Measuring pumpkins; Sorting shapes
Preschool
For Preschool, the theme is “My Community.” Sample activities include:
- Library and Language Arts:Sorting words; Discussing letters and words in community signs; Featured Book: Worksong by Gary Paulsen
- Creative Arts: Creating signs
- Science & Sensory: Exploring play dough with tools, cookie cutters, and plastic vehicles and people
- Dramatic Play: Taking on a variety of roles in a beauty shop
- Math & Manipulatives: Identifying numerals in home addresses
Prekindergarten
For Prekindergarten, the theme is “My Community.” Sample activities include:
- Library & Literacy: Writing letters; Exploring books and photographs about communities and community-related items; Worksong by Gary Paulsen
- Creative Arts: Creating grocery collages; Stamping with alphabet and number stamps at the easel
- Science & Sensory: Exploring the melting of ice; Writing and forming letters with flubber
- Dramatic Play: Role-playing and pretending in a grocery store
- Math & Manipulatives: Sorting objects by various attributes
